Private Auto Body Repair vs. Insurance

Show us the damage.
We’ll help you weigh your options.

Private auto body repair means you pay the shop directly. It can be a practical option when damage is not covered, repair costs are close to your deductible, or you want to prepare your vehicle for sale or lease return.

Your Colorworks Express advisor explains the repair and prepares an estimate. You can then choose the next step with a clearer picture of the cost.

Retail repair, explained

Start with the repair estimate. Choose how to pay.

A bumper scrape or dent can leave you wondering whether to use insurance. Our Colorworks Team helps you understand the work first: what can be repaired, whether further checks are needed, and the expected cost.

Private auto body repair gives you a direct arrangement with the shop. You approve the work and pay the invoice. Insurance can still be the better route for a larger covered loss, hidden damage or a crash where you were not responsible.

We can help you compare repair options. Your insurer confirms coverage and any policy or premium effects.

Choose your repair option

When paying directly can make sense

Know the numbers before choosing

When paying directly can make sense

The cost is close to your deductible

If your assessed repair is below the applicable deductible, insurance may contribute nothing toward that repair. If it is only slightly higher, compare the benefit with the full picture.

You want to understand the claim impact

A small repair bill does not automatically mean a small premium effect. Your Colorworks Express advisor can help compare the private repair estimate with your deductible. Your insurer confirms any premium effect.

You want a straightforward repair plan

Approve a defined repair directly with the shop. Ask which dents, scuffs or paint marks can be addressed together, and agree on the scope, cost and schedule before work starts.

Illustrative repair costs, not a quote: For a $1,000 covered repair with a $1,000 applicable deductible, there would be no repair payment from the insurer. For a $1,500 covered repair with the same deductible, the difference is $500 before any other applicable costs or premium effects. These examples are not a minimum repair charge or a claim threshold. Check your policy: ICBC’s guide lists typical Collision and Comprehensive deductibles from $300 to $2,500, with higher amounts for some high-value vehicles.

Options when insurance does not cover the damage

Private-pay auto body repairs · Metro Vancouver

No Collision coverage? You still have repair options.

Your Colorworks Express advisor can assess the damage and prepare a private repair estimate. We’ll explain the work and next steps before you decide.

No Collision coverage

After an at-fault or single-vehicle crash, repairs to your own vehicle may be your responsibility if you have no Collision coverage from ICBC or another insurer.

Hit-and-run damage without the right coverage

Check for Collision or separate Hit and Run coverage. Without applicable protection, you may need a private estimate.

Vandalism without applicable protection

Keyed paint or malicious damage may be uninsured without Comprehensive or other applicable coverage. Specified Perils alone does not cover vandalism.

Age-related wear and deterioration

Rust, corrosion and wear are generally excluded, subject to policy exceptions. For ageing paint, ask which finish services are suitable.

Not at fault? Basic Vehicle Damage coverage may still cover your vehicle, even without Collision. Your insurer confirms the incident’s coverage.

Other reasons to choose a private repair

Repair costs at or below your deductible: coverage may exist, but there may be no insurer contribution toward that repair.

Lease-return or resale preparation: improving the finish or preparing a vehicle for return is not, by itself, an insured event. Existing damage may have a separate coverage basis.

Ask us about dent repair, bumper scuffs and SMART paint repairs, paint correction and lease-return preparation. Services depend on the assessment and shop.

ICBC premiums, forgiveness and repayment

The ICBC side, explained

Will an ICBC claim affect my insurance?

ICBC says being more than 25% responsible for a crash will likely increase premiums at your next renewal or insurance purchase, unless your record qualifies for an exception. Optional insurance and policies where you are a listed driver may also be affected. A claim does not automatically mean every driver’s premium will increase.

Ask about crash forgiveness

ICBC describes forgiveness for one crash after 20 years of driving experience, including at least 10 in B.C., provided you have been crash-free for the previous 10 years. Confirm your eligibility before deciding how to handle a minor repair.

RoadStar is a separate optional coverage package. It should not be described as a “free claim.” Discuss your repair options with your Colorworks Express advisor, who can help you identify what to confirm with ICBC.

ICBC crash history & forgiveness →

Ask whether a claim can be repaid

ICBC says repaying eligible claim costs may be worthwhile after a crash without injuries or costly vehicle damage. Your Colorworks Express advisor can help you explore this option; ICBC confirms eligibility and the complete repayment amount.

A repayment decision is separate from paying the repair shop directly. Avoid relying on a fixed dollar rule without checking your claim.

ICBC responsibility & repayment →

What if you were not responsible? ICBC says Basic Vehicle Damage coverage pays for your vehicle repairs when you are not at fault in a crash with another vehicle. Check your entitlement before paying privately. Your insurer confirms how the specific incident is covered.

For an accurate ICBC premium-impact estimate, ICBC says you need to be within six weeks of renewal. Start with your Colorworks Express advisor to compare repair options and identify what to confirm with ICBC. Other insurance providers have their own policy terms.

Questions before choosing

Private auto body repair questions

What does retail auto body repair mean?

Retail or private-pay auto body repair means you pay the repair shop directly. Your Colorworks Express advisor assesses the damage, prepares an estimate and explains the proposed work before you approve it.

Can I pay for auto body repairs without using insurance?

Yes. You can pay Colorworks directly for an assessed and approved repair. A private repair estimate is useful for comparing minor damage with your deductible and the potential cost of a claim. Your Colorworks Express advisor helps compare repair options; your insurer confirms how the incident affects your policy.

When might an insurance claim be the better choice?

Consider insurance when repair costs are substantial, hidden damage is possible, the vehicle is unsafe to drive, or another person, vehicle or property is involved. If you were not responsible, ask ICBC about Basic Vehicle Damage coverage before assuming you should pay yourself.

Is RoadStar the same as crash forgiveness?

No. RoadStar is an optional insurance package. ICBC describes crash forgiveness separately: one crash may be forgiven after 20 years of driving experience, including at least 10 in B.C., if you have been crash-free for the previous 10 years. Start with your Colorworks Express advisor to discuss the repair. ICBC confirms forgiveness eligibility and any effect on insurance.

Will a small ICBC claim increase my premiums?

The size of the repair is not the only factor. ICBC says being more than 25% responsible will likely increase premiums unless your record qualifies for an exception. The effect depends on responsibility, driving and crash history, and coverage. Discuss the repair with your Colorworks Express advisor; ICBC confirms the effect on your policy.

Can I repay an ICBC claim instead?

ICBC says repaying eligible claim costs may make financial sense after a crash without injuries or costly vehicle damage. Your Colorworks Express advisor can help you consider repayment alongside a private repair. ICBC confirms eligibility, the complete repayable amount and any premium impact.

Does paying privately include vehicle concierge?

Vehicle concierge is available only through the ICBC Valet service. For a private-pay Express repair, contact the shop about appointments and any other arrangements available.

Should I delay reporting a crash while I compare repair costs?

Do not delay required reporting or necessary care to obtain an estimate. Contact ICBC or your insurer about reporting and policy requirements, especially if anyone is injured or another vehicle or property is involved. Paying for your own repair does not settle another party’s claim.

Can Colorworks repair my vehicle if I do not have Collision coverage?

Yes. Ask your Colorworks Express advisor for a private repair estimate. Without Collision coverage from ICBC or another insurer, you may need to pay for your own vehicle repairs after an at-fault or single-vehicle crash. If another driver was responsible, Basic Vehicle Damage coverage may still apply. Your insurer confirms coverage.
